With the game just about to be released a few days from now, we take a look at the Prey Demo Preview. Here’s a quick look at the game’s Opening Hour Demo that was released a little while back.
First of all, why is this game not called Half-life 3? Or even some sort of Half -Life reboot? Yes, I know the two titles aren’t even made by the same studio but just look at it. When you play Prey, you get this feeling that reminds you so much of Half-Life. For starters, you play Morgan Yu which if you discard the last name sounds a lot like Gordan…you know, Freeman. The game also starts off with a “normal” day at work when one of the experiments go horribly wrong and the base is overrun by alien outsiders. Only this time those aliens are head crab looking things called Mimics. What’s different about them though is they have this scary ability to turn into any object in the game world. As if that wasn’t unnerving enough, they suck the life out of people and multiply. So that chair you looking at could very possibly jump at you and suck you dry.
Once you get passed the first tutorial section, the game begins to open up and gives you a multitude of choices on how to progress. The base itself is semi open with some areas being locked off until you can get your hands on access codes or keycards to open up the section. Players get access to your regular assortment of weapons as well as rather different gadgets to help you fight off these Mimics. Gordan’s crowbar is replaced by a wrench. I mean Morgan, sorry. And one of the first really interesting weapons you get is GLOO gun. This weapon shoots these weird foam like blobs which can be used for gameworld traversal or to freeze Mimics for a short while so you can smash them while they’re vulnerable.
In addition to the weapons, players will get access to the same kind of powers the Mimics have. Unfortunately, that gameplay has been left out of the Opening Hours Demo. The game also features some RPG-like elements for increasing your shooting ability or getting you better at hacking or repairing in-game equipment. The only way to improve these abilities is by picking up Neuromods scattered throughout the base. You have to stick this thing into your eye to use them.
Prey isn’t really a graphical powerhouse. But it gets around that by having a unique Bioshock in Space art style. And even though I played the game on a PS4 Pro, I didn’t notice any improvement to the visuals. All that aside, I really did enjoy my time with Prey and can’t wait to get my hands on the full title. So stay tuned to SkyGamers for more on Prey which launches on the 5th May 2017 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
