The gaming industry’s favourite villain has announced the official EA Streaming Platform. I can’t help but think that it is the beginning of the end of all gamers.
The advent of cloud gaming in the mainstream is about to become a harsh reality. Sony already has the PS Now service which has been reported to be…ok. We don’t have the service in this country so I can’t say for sure. Microsoft tested the waters with Gamepass but is going all in with their upcoming XCloud service. Ubisoft has jumped into bed with Google with their Project Stream service. And lastly, the villains of the industry have announced the EA Streaming Platform.
The service is called Project Atlas and its main function is to move money from your pockets to EA’s coffers. Ok seriously though, chief technology officer at EA, Ken Moss said the service combines of the power of Frostbite gaming engine with machine learning technology. He also added that artificial intelligence will be used to empower game developers make new connected experiences. That’s code for more Games as a Service jargon basically. In addition to that, the Geist of it is that the games will now live on EA’s services and you will stream them to a small client on your PC’s. This implies that you won’t be owning the game per se, and rather paying for access and use.
As much as the technology is truly impressive, and the idea of instant Start to game rather than waiting to download is highly enticing. I can’t help but feel we will be sitting in situations where I game that you paid for can be pulled from the service without prior notice and you won’t have anything to show for it. No actually owning your games is a scary though that is seemingly about to become our new reality. Welcome to the end boys and gals.
