Sony may be copying Nintendo’s Homework with the classic console re-releases but the PlayStation Classic Games List is disappointing.
PlayStation was a huge deal when it was originally released in 1995. Sony has being going from strength to strength ever since. It is iconic and I am all in when it comes to releasing the now retro PS Classic. I don’t even mind the price tag either. What I do mind though is the measly PlayStation Classic Games List that has been revealed. Sure there are some gems in there, but there’s a lot of duds included there too. Here’s the complete list below.
- Battle Arena Toshinden
- Cool Boarders 2
- Destruction Derby
- Final Fantasy VII
- Grand Theft Auto
- Intelligent Qube
- Jumping Flash!
- Metal Gear Solid
- Mr. Driller
- Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
- Rayman
- Resident Evil (Director’s Cut)
- Revelations: Persona
- Ridge Racer Type 4
- Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
- Syphon Filter
- Tekken 3
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
- Twisted Metal
- Wild Arms
Sure I will admit, Metal Gear Solid is a stroke of genius adding it to the collection. An absolute must for anyone wanting that definitive PlayStation experience. Another gem from back in those days is Tekken 3, a game that I myself have spent countless hours playing back in the day. Resident Evil was obviously going to make the cut, though I feel Resident Evil 3 was the stronger title from that era. The classic must owns are rounded off by the inclusion of Ridge Racer Type 4, Twisted Metal and the godlike RPG that is Final Fantasy VII.
Can somebody tell me what the hell happened with the rest of the list? Yes Ridge racer is great but it doesn’t hold a candle to Gran Turismo, the definitive racing game of the era. Which is inexplicably missing. I remember Rainbow Six handling like ASS without the dual analogue sticks, so that’s annoying. Crash is nowhere to be found, or Spyro. Wasn’t Soul Edge on the original console? Sure isn’t on the classic version. There’s so many PS games that could’ve been included that just aren’t there. Worst yet, the console doesn’t have any network connectivity so don’t hold your breath for more games being added.
I’m going to be honest and say I’m hugely disappointed by this package. It’s a great idea that seems to be quite poorly executed. Sure it has some great games, but its not the definitive collection of classic PlayStation games I was hoping for. Still, will be great revisiting Tekken 3 and Final Fantasy VII. Even if it will look like ASS on my 4K TV.
