The Shenmue III teaser trailer is making the rounds on the interwebz. We thought we take a peek ourselves and see what the fuss about its animations is all about. Jump in.
Shenmue is an action adventure game that was released over a decade ago on the Sega Dreamcast. It was an instant cult classic that expanded the idea of open-world games. At the time, the amount of detail on offer was unmatched. Unfortunately after the sequel’s release 14 years ago, the game never reached its conclusion to its revenge tale. Until now, Shenmue III had a successful Kickstarter campaign to the tune of $3.6 million. So it goes without saying that it is highly anticipated. However, the first Shenmue III teaser trailer seems to be causing a bit of a stir due to its rigid character animations.
After checking out the trailer ourselves, it has to be said that though the backdrops are absolutely stunning, the characters are somewhat lacking. All of the characters in the game have these stiff robotic animations which might be a bit hard to swallow for a 2017 game. Which is strange considering everything else in the game looks so amazing. But hold on a second! Going back in time and looking at the older games you begin to see that perhaps this was intentional. Its predecessors all have that same stylistic ruggedness. Granted the technology at the time wouldn’t be able to yield Uncharted 4 levels of facial animations. But the way the characters look seems to be very true to the original games. Add to that, the game is still in development and the team still has time to refine those further. I’m very keen to see where this goes.
What do you guys think? Do you agree that it could be intentional or that it’s just very poorly implemented animations? Share your thoughts in the comments below after checking out the trailer for yourself.
