We all know times are tough when it comes to money, more and more people are reluctant to spend their hard earned ca$h. The gaming industry is not immune to the weakening economy with some studios closing their doors.
Lionhead studios who produced fable, black and white shut down because of poor sales. THQ closed down plenty of their sub divisions like Vigil Games. Famous for the Darksiders franchise lucky Nordic games bought them out so let see if they can fly the flag high. Disney also closed Bellevue studios putting a toy line as well as games froms its roster .Earlier in the year Sony cut 55 jobs from Evolution studios due to market changes. Sony later announced that they will be closing Evolution studios completely. They made exciting racing games like World rally championship , MotorStorm and recently Driveclub. Press play is another of Microsoft’s games studios closing its doors in 2016. Most recent gaming house closing their doors is United Front. Sleeping dogs was a great open-world crime adventure using the GTA formula.
The other side of the scale there are companies like 2K and Electronic Arts. Sport got a boost in the last two month with sales of NBA 2K17 NHL 17 and Fifa 17. Mafia3 also from 2K recorded a excellent first week opening with millions of copies sold. One must also look at the mobile gaming space where there are talks that it will surpass console and PC gaming in the years to come. There seems to be more and more competition to bring out better and greater games. With the accessibility of new hardware and skilled programmers even smaller Indie game studios can produce a cracker of a game.
The matter at hand is that it is a sad day when a studio decides to call it quite regardless of the reasons. Everyone is a lose , the staff no longer has job and the games that enjoyed their hard work need to shop elsewhere now.
